Family vacations should be something to remember, not something that you want to forget. A burglary can be devastating to families, leaving you without the means to provide for your children and often in a situation where sentimental belongings cannot be replaced. If you’re planning your next holiday, think about the safety of your home, before you leave for the journey of a lifetime. Ensuring that your home is safe and secure will help you to rest at ease, as you relax on your holiday. The following tips will help you to prepare your home for the holiday season.
Doors & Locks
Making certain that your locks and doors are in working order, before leaving, is the first step in securing your home. While you may know that your front door works, because you use it every day, it is always a good idea to check bedroom windows, which aren’t regularly opened. The locks of windows that are not commonly used could become lose or broken, without you even realising. To ensure the safety of your home, regularly check that your locks are in good working order.
Home Security Systems
While not everyone has a home security system, those who frequently venture on long trips, away from the family home, should consider the installation of a security system. Home security systems are available with a range of different services and offer the peace of mind of knowing that the security company, or the police, are just a moment away.
Fencing & Boundary Perimeters
Various home designs feature different fencing options that are dependent upon the neighbouring properties and your boundary line. If you are building a new home and plan to holiday with your family, take time in considering your fencing options. Reputable home builders will be able to provide you with recommendations about the best fencing options for you and your family.
Window Security
While it is something that is often overlooked, window security can bring a whole new dynamic to the security of your house. In year’s past, window security options often made family homes look more like jails. Nowadays, however, there are a number of options that are both safe and aesthetically pleasing.
Be Neighbourly
Now you don’t have to go as far enrolling as a member of your local neighbourhood watch, but just inform a close neighbour or friend that you will be leaving on a family holiday. Making your close friends aware of your absence will help them to keep an eye on your house, as well as helping out with simple tasks such as collecting your mail or bringing in your bins.
Home safety should always be a number one priority for holidaying families. Before your next family vacation, ensure that your house is safe, by following our simply guide above.

I love the part about the neighbors for sure. When we lived in town we didn’t have to tell our neighbors anything, they were nosy and knew when we came and went. haha

The only thing that worries me about fences is that once the thief finally gets over it, he has somewhere to hide, lol. Seriously though, these are all really good tips! Thanks!

Great tips! We are lucky to live in a neighborhood with really great neighbors – we all look out for each other and keep each other informed if we’ll be out of town.
Have a nice weekend!

We traveled a bunch this summer and I did have some concerns about our home. Luckily we have a great police department and you can let them know when you’re out of town. They will drive by. We also have an alarm system.

These are great ideas. I often worry about our home while we are away. We are members of our neighborhood block watch and it helps knowing our neighbors are keeping a watch on our house.

Great tips! Someone attempted to break into our home a few years ago while pregnant me and my then 6 year old son were home alone. Our security system went off as they were jimmying the lock on our sliding door and scared them off. Definitely all for protecting my family and keeping a sense of security. Thanks for sharing!
I always worry if everything is okay at home while traveling. Thanks for the great tips, they would give me more peace of mind!

We just returned from a week long vacation. And, although we live in a super nice area, you always worry a bit about something happening while you’re away. I think knowing and having a good relationship with your neighbors helps ease your mind a ton!

Super good tips you have here. I agree, knowing, and meeting your neighbors is very important. We are going out of town in Dec. I’ll have to put some of these tips to good use.
