The Graham Staines Story

In 1965, Australian Christian missionary- Graham Staines answered the call of God upon his life to serve the tribal community in Orissa, India. Several years later he met his wife, Gladys, they married, had 3 beautiful children on the very same soils, and continued to serve the masses as a family.

In 1999, as Graham Staines and his 2 sons- Phillip (10) and Timothy (6)- lay asleep in their station wagon, a gang hostile towards the work this family was doing, set fire to the vehicle. Staines and his sons lost their lives in the raging fire.

In the wake of this tragedy, all eyes turned towards his widowed wife and daughter. Many thought they’d leave the country, as a result. But Gladys Staines and their daughter Esther stayed on to continue the work Graham Staines had begun.

When asked how angered she was towards the gang who had taken away the joy of her life, she humbly replied, “I have forgiven them”

This tugged at my heart strings so hard.

It gently reminded me of how much God can do…if only I allow Him to.
