Yes, DoSomething.org’s huge teen movement…The Hunt is propelling forward with momentum.
Yesterday we worked on the Disaster Response & Relief Challenge, today we worked on the Energy Conservation Challenge. {I know it’s a little strange why the challenge doesn’t show up on the site right now but it was working fine earlier this morning. }
.
.
Our days activities included…
.
- Working on our list of 5 ways to conserve water in our home. We even coined up a WATER acronym to help us remember.
(I’ve just posted this on Facebook and Twitter to do our bit of speaking for the Earth! {Think Lorax!!} )
.
- Unplugging electronics that weren’t in use. (I’m embarrassed to admit that we did have to do quite a bit of unplugging!)
.
.
- Checking to ensure our AC settings were set at 78 degrees Fahrenheit. (Even though we’re in sultry Texas, our home cools well and we generally don’t have to meddle around with our AC settings. We generally average 78-79 regularly.)
.
We also sat down and talked about the importance of switching off lights and fans when not in use. And Hubs has a great habit of changing our AC settings to 80-82 degrees when we step out of the house to run errands etc.
We also pro-actively recycle all our plastic, paper and cardboard. My 2 year old mirrors our example and now knows that he needs to set aside the recyclable stuff from the trash.
..
Watching the Lorax with our little ones this past Earth Day was a great way of getting them excited to do their part to conserve resources. And this challenge only accentuated everything they’ve been learning.

*It isn’t too late to sign up and be a part of this huge campaign. This is a great way of getting the young folk to productively give back. And a way to bond as a family while attempting each challenge. *

** DoSomething.org has partnered with Lenovo, the world’s second largest PC maker who helped found the campaign last year, and Bing, the search engine from Microsoft, to launch “The Hunt: 11 Days of Doing.” Give them the support they deserve for putting together such a great campaign! **

Wow, that is so cool! What great ideas, thank you for sharing them! I definitely need to conserve more energy and its such a challenge with the massive heat wave we’ve been in!

These are all great suggestions. I am fine with keeping the AC at about 80, but hubby freaks out at it. Maybe I should show him your post!

Great tips! I’m guilty having too many things plugged in. I need to go around my house and unplug the things I don’t use.

Energy conservation is something we need to work on in our home – especially after seeing last month’s power bill in the mail today! Thanks for the ideas!!

I’m happy that we’re already doing a lot of what you’ve suggested. Energy conservation is important not only for our energy use but for our electric bill as well!

I could do a bit (aka A LOT) of unplugging. Seriously, I know we have an issue here! Maybe I’ll work on it this wweekend!
