The Hunt’s Disaster Response & Relief Challenge

.

Yesterday we introduced you to DoSomething.org’s huge teen movement…The Hunt.

.

This morning, I decided to work on Day 9′s challenge with my 6 year old and her 2 year old assistant.

Why?

Well our corner of Texas is considered hurricane prone, so I figured this would be the best place to start!

.

.

Our days activities included…

  • Checking the smoke detectors around the home.
  • Listing out contact addresses and phone numbers to call in an emergency.
  • Checking to see if our home, Bunny girl’s school and Hubs work place were in flood prone zones. (Thankfully we’re clear!)
  • Listing out probable Plans of Action in case of an emergency evacuation.
  • Placing important documents, i.d.s etc in a portable “Grab and Run” safety box
  • Building Disaster Kits for our cars and home. (Here’s where those baby wipes boxes come in handy)

.

.

And without any warning, we heard a huge clap of thunder, followed by several strikes of lightening.

Fantastic timing…a nice, robust, storm!

.

We lost power for a few seconds but thankfully Bunny girl was able to whip out the mini torch we’d saved in our kit, before Bunny Boo dissolved into tears.

.

We would have continued putting together our emergency pantry supplies, but a certain 2 year old just wanted to climb into bed with his Mommy and sister. The brewing storm didn’t sound too kind so falling asleep was his way of trying to avoid listening to the claps, crackles and slams. (Poor baby!)

.

As I type this out, we’re in the calm of the storm but my 2 year old is glued to my side…still asleep. Our pantry essentials will just need to be tackled an hour from now!

.

.

*Another set of challenges lie ahead of us tomorrow. Make sure to check back on the day’s posts to read our report! And remember…it isn’t too late to sign up and be a part of this huge campaign. You won’t regret the decision! *
