A Walk Down Memory Lane…Olympics Opening Ceremony 2012

I grew up surrounded by a strong British influence…

All of my Elementary School education was in a British school

The church we worshiped in was an Anglican church and

All the holidays, events and traditions we observed as a family were clearly British.

We also followed everything the Royal Family did, as if we were personally acquainted with them in some way!
.

So when we sat down to watch the 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony last night, it felt like I was taking a walk down memory lane…

The opening hymn sung (I remember singing this in church, as a child. )

The British National Anthem (We had to memorize it to sing at school)

Poppies (We passed around poppies in church, every Remembrance Sunday. And one Remembrance Sunday, we actually had HRH Prince Charles visit our church and attend service.)

Mary Poppins (My sister and I loved this movie. Oh and Sound of Music too!)

The Beatles (My mother is a huge fan, so we grew up listening to their music. Did I ever mention she actually met all 4 ? And boldly walked up to Yoko Ono’s hotel room and got John Lennon’s autograph when she was in her late teens?!)

and so much more!

Not being a fan of Harry Potter anything, I did think the scary creatures was out of place in the whole thing. And the Parade of Nations was long. (But what a once-in-a-lifetime experience that is for those athletes.)

Otherwise everything else was mind-blowing.

I love that Danny Boyle ensured everything that counted was included…

The Great Ormand Street Hospital

Veterans who’d face wars ago

Past British Olympians and

Construction workers who were instrumental in putting together the Olympic Park. (This was so moving. To see the workers form the guard of honor for the Olympic Torch)

Yes, there was so much I loved in the Opening Ceremony.

One of my absolute favorite segments was Chariots of Fire…

But nothing…nothing took the cake like the Queen’s Entrance!

.

What an amazing, amazing event!

.

To sum it all , I guess I’d have to say my Facebook Status last night hits the ceremonious nail on the head…

Oh yeah!

And now the Games begin!

The opening ceremonies didn’t do it for me but I completely understand what Danny Boyle was trying to achieve. Nevertheless, it is always exciting to see all the athletes parading through the stadium.

fantastic and fab…..your post on the Olympics….it sure was a walk down memory lane for a lot of the spectators…think the ceremony was just jam packed with history, music and creativity…so many emotional, moving moments..as you wrote of the builders and the workers forming the guard of honour and honouring the vetrans…so much of history in dazzling seqences..all in split seconds and often tongue in cheek…a memorable viewing !

It was one of the best opening ceremonies I can remember.
I really liked the Harry Potter part. Its great that something from our generation could be a part of it
My family still can’t agree on whether the queen really parachuted in!

I missed it and I’m so sad! I must be stuck in babyland where nothing but Bubble Guppies exists. It looks like it was amazing – I’ll have to see if I can find it on YouTube!

I want to see this Olympic event 2012 yet I am quite far in London so I will just watch this one probably online or in the television about the happenings. This event is so very interesting to follow seem it can be able to give pride to the countries involving on this event.
