The brain child of a single Mommy, Lakeshore Learning has grown to be the store for all things learning, educational and…fun!
With summer rolling on in full steam, doing a whole lot outdoors isn’t very easy. And being the sort of parent who doesn’t want her child to go back to school with a learning withdrawal, I picked 3 educational games to help keep the learning curve sharpened.
{Quick heads up: If you plan to narrow down on shopping choices on the Lakeshore Learning site, prepare your self for a good 1-2 hours of finalization. That site has way too many great resources. Making a choice is hard!!}
1. Linking Number Monkeys
MSRP: 29.95 US$
Building early math skills is a snap when children get their hands on our cute linking monkeys! Each brightly colored monkey has a big, bold number from 1 to 30 printed right on its belly. Children just link the monkeys’ hands together to build number recognition, practice counting, boost sequencing skills & more! Each monkey is 2 1⁄2″ tall. Age Appropriateness: 3-5 years
While this is ideally better suited for Bunny Boo since he’s learning his numbers and colors, we found a way to make it appropriate for a 6 year old too…
We did addition and subtraction. And slowly over the months, will progress on to multiplication and division.
How?
I’d link 2 monkeys (Say Monkey 9 and Monkey 5) and ask Bunny girl to add the numbers. Once she adds up the figures in her head and arrives at the figure, she has to link up the answer (Monkey 14) to the other two.
Improvisation and a little creativity always goes a long way!
2. Matter Match-Ups

It’s never been easier to build knowledge of matter than with self-correcting puzzles that provide instant reinforcement! Our set includes 12 different 3-piece puzzles that give students hands-on practice with key physical science topics. Children just match up each picture to its corresponding word and definition…and learn all about condensation & evaporation, volume & mass, light & heat, and more! Each puzzle is 5″ x 6″. Age Appropriateness: 7-8 years
I think it always helps to prepare a child for the academic year ahead. We helped Bunny girl with her reading and numbers the summer before she started Kindergarten. As a result, the school year was relatively a breeze. She was equipped, confident and I believe, comfortable in the learning environment because she didn’t feel lost with the word and number overload…because her foundation had been set the months prior.

The next academic year is a whole new adventure. 1st grade learning while fun, can be challenging. To introduce Bunny girl to a few Science concepts, we picked up this set.

The use of pictures and puzzles does help make understanding Matter concepts easier for a 6 year old…without a doubt!

3. Operations Magnetic Activity Board
.
Students master operations…with an irresistible activity board that provides plenty of hands-on practice! Our clear-view board has 20 fully contained magnetic tiles, plus 15 double-sided activity mats with 30 different activities. Children simply slide a mat into the board, then use the attached magnetic wand to guide the tiles into place—completing number sentences, solving math problems, answering story problems and more! 11″ x 13″ board features a permanently sealed top to keep tiles contained; with 4 answer cards. Age Appropriateness: 6-8 years.
This, by far, is our favorite of our 3 picks. The very fact that I don’t have number tokens falling all over the place and everything stays compact is a big plus for this Mama. Not only does this sharpen math reasoning and analytic thinking, but also improves the child’s eye-hand coordination.
This is also a great game to pop into the travel bag, for that long car drive or airplane journey. (See that’s why I love the encased factor!)
