Now don’t get me wrong , I do love technology but I think we’re taking it too far when…
- The family decides to have dinner together at the local dining hot-spot and instead of catching up on what’s happening in each others lives, Dad’s busy checking the game scores on his phone while Mom’s texting her best friend and their 6-year-old? Oh well, he’s watching his favorite movie on the iPad he got for his birthday!
- The kids are glued to what’s popped into the portable DVD player when Mom drives them to and from school every day. (Note: School is only a 10 minute drive away!)
- One’s preschooler asks for a Wii for Christmas and Dad grins smugly because that’s what he’d decided to get for her anyway!
- Mom sends the Teen a text message asking when he plans to join the family for dinner. He texts back promising to join the family in 10 minutes. (Note: Mom’s in the kitchen while the Teen is in his room…Yes, under the same roof!)
I must be terribly old-fashioned because I seriously think something IS wrong with these scenarios.
We’re robbing our family of valuable one-on-one time and stealing a potentially well-rounded childhood when we feed our kids with the latest “in” tech gadgets to entertain their every waking moment when out of school!
Is it just me or am I missing something here?

Yes I know technology is becoming way too advanced too fast, if I had teh Money I would probably be the same way but not having enough money to even pay all the bills it wouldnt be possible to buy all the latest electronics
I think if you had the money you’d be careful to allocate it for what is really necessary for your family and not what’s the rage in the market. You’re right tech IS becoming way too advanced too fast!! Oh boy!
I have had to cut my 5 year old from playing the wii during the week because it bothers me how much he wanted to play with that and not his little brother! It is crazy how technology has taken over our lives!
Poor baby brother. Just wait a few years and he’ll be wrestling to play that wii along with big bro! Welcome to the new generation!
I’m guilty of #2! But to my defense we don’t have home tv and its always an educational dvd
Now that is a decent justification!
Right, it’s so important not to let technology get in the way of quality family time.
Hubby keeps holding me back from walking over to those families at restaurants and telling them just that!

I totally agree that it has gotten out of hand. I try to unplug when we are spending quality family time together but I have to admit it can be hard at times.
True. We’ve made it a rule to sit at the table for our meals and on long trips spend time singing and playing games. The kiddos don’t know there is an option of a portable dvd player for those long drives. It’s working great so far but then my oldest is 5 and the youngest 15 mos
Okay, so I do sit on my couch most of the evening on my computer, but that is my set aside blogging time. Yeah, it kills me that my younger brothers and sisters send 1000+ text messages every month. Really, you have that much to say???
For the very reasons you listed my husband and I have decided not to have cable, there is no phone or computer usage during meal times, we have 1 iPod, but it stays in the car. Sometimes it is not a bad thing to be behind the times.
You know 1000+ seems like nothing when you look at my friend’s text summary for the month- 3000+ messages…WHAT???
i TOTALLY hear you! that is so obnoxious, i can’t stand people who behave like that. the only time i am on the phone at dinner is when it my grandma calling- i always pick up for her. that’s just a “thing”- but other then that, nope! answering machine.
When Grandma calls you just have to pick up the phone!!
No but the phone is honestly ok when compared to kids on their ipads at the table…irks me!!
liked, tweeted, stumbled, +1ed, etc. this is a good one, lady!
Lol! TYVM
I agree…technology is taking over family time. Thankfully my 9 and 11 year olds still think that hanging with mom and dad on the weekend is cool…I wonder how long that will last!
That is so awesome! I pray my 5 yr old and 15 mo old will feel that way when they’re that age.
