What better way to start a school year than with a collection of great books! (Yeah! Go Scholastic!!)
Over the summer we helped Bunny girl learn to read independently and I can honestly say that our decision to start her off was so worth the effort because she’s crazy about books.
We started Bunny girl off with the BOB Books (remember this Learning to Read with BOB books post?) and then eventually graduated her onto Early Readers.
So to celebrate reading and the start of a new school adventure in Kindergarten, Scholastic has kindly offered up a great 5 book gift package that would be age appropriate for older Preschoolers, Kinder kids and 1st graders. This pack will include…
1. BOB Books: Sight Word for Kindergarten
This set includes 30 sight words (printed on two sided flash cards) your Kindergarten-goer should know how to read by the time he/she ends the school year. The 30 words are introduced to the young reader, 3 at a time, in the 10 short story Easy Readers that have been included. I love that the Easy Readers introduce the child to a specific sight word but also repeat usage of the same to reinforce what has been learnt.
Our summer reading sessions paid off when Bunny girl read off all 30 words (Yay for BOB!) and was at ease reading through the Easy Readers. I definitely recommend using this Set with your child. It will give him/her that head start before Kindergarten is through!
We read this sweet book the night before Kindergarten, to help settle any unspoken fears Bunny girl may have had!
The book opens with children getting all set f0r their first day of school…some filled with excitement, others with mixed emotions and a few with fear. The next morning everyone follows different routines and as time ticks on, they slowly move towards the school premises and then it’s finally time…time to begin a “Happy School Year”!
3. Appleville Elementary: First Day
.
Now this is a book you should get your brand new 1st Grader especially if he/she is not too keen to move on from Kindergarten to 1st Grade…like Carlos.
There’s only one little piece of news that intrigues Carlos to perhaps stay a while…the arrival of a new addition to the class.
Your young reader will enjoy reading this book with a little help if he/she is an early reader or solo if a Kindergarten graduate.
4. Ready for Kindergarten, Stinky Face?
This was the second book we read the night before Kindergarten. Both of us had a good laugh reading Stinky Face’s funny fears about Kindergarten and Bunny girl thought it was hilarious he actually thought a hungry armadillo would appear in class waiting to eat his macaroni necklace! I personally loved reading the way Mommy answers her son’s absurd questions patiently and wisely, sweetly settling his worries before the big day arrives!

5. Ruby Bridges goes to School : My True Story
.
This is an inspirational true story of little Ruby Bridges who changed school history when she broke away the racial barriers schools in the 1960s had. The fact that the book is illustrated with those good ol’ black and white photographs brings Ruby’s story to life for your little reader.
I would definitely recommend this book for children to understand that the freedom they enjoy in today’s school environment was because of the determination and will power of a young girl.
So there you have it. 5 great books…a great way to start of a new school year!
Win it:.
One reader will win this 45$ “Back To School” 5 book gift pack from Scholastic.
